The most valuable moments on your wedding or elopement day will be the moments that you stop and catch your breath. Look around you and notice who’s present; they’re all there for you. Look at your spouse; he or she is yours forever. Step away from your guests and listen to your surroundings. Take a 360 degree turn; these are the things you’ll commit to memory. And they are everything.

Details; I'm all about them. It's what drew me into photography in the first place, and now I gravitate toward them any day that I'm shooting.

I embraced a new decade in October in my favorite

I embraced a new decade in October in my favorite place in the world (up in the north cascades). A particular mountain that I've only ever visited on my birthday, post-peak-season, when the ridges belong to just us. The first time I hiked it in 2015, I had the flu, and hated every step up, but have never forgotten the trail.

I feel most at peace here. The hike is tough with an overnight pack, and the reward is something special; miles of rocks, cliffs, and peaks. The light of dawn is unreal here.

As I reflect on my first few decades, I've found the following to be true:
- If we wait until we're ready, we'll never be ready.
- Being faithful and consistent in daily responsibilities is how we grow.
- Counseling is one of the best things we can do for ourselves (and our relationships).
- People need community; home cooked meals help.
- Technology isn't it.
- Vulnerability ignites healing (with wisdom in sharing with the right people).
- Children are a gift beyond anything words could describe.
- Full, abundant, over-flowing-from-the-top kind of life comes from Jesus - not from our own efforts or from other people (depth of peace unlike anything else, joy unlike anything else, deep comfort in the midst of loss - truly, unlike anything else).
- Our feelings don't dictate God's goodness. Because he IS good, whether we feel it or not, believe it or not, or see it or not. It's not in his character to be anything less than good.
- Marriage is not easy but it's a commitment worth keeping and the story gets BETTER. Fixing the foundation first (hello counseling) makes everything else easier to navigate later on.
- We can't have the mountain top experiences without the hike. No matter how grueling the hike may be, there is a summit, and with it, perspective follows.

Thanks everyone for the birthday love this year; I'm grateful for so, so many of you.
